11: Queen Cat

Angelina entered the cave and this time, though she couldn’t see far, she could see the path a foot or two in front of her. It was still black dark beyond the ring of light cast by the berries, but she stiffened her spine and moved forward.

“I’ll never have more courage than I do right now,” she thought. “And if I don’t move forward, I’ll never find the stone, and I’ll be stuck as a unicorn the rest of my life. I wonder how long unicorns live.”

Something skittered in the darkness to her left, and she jumped, but when she turned her light that way, she didn’t see anything, so she kept moving. The path wended downward, curving and turning as it went. The walls were damp, and in places rivulets of water ran down from the ceiling, forming puddles on the floor. The hall she traveled narrowed and widened with each turn, making some parts so big she couldn’t see the walls, while other spots were barely wide enough for her to get through.

The journey went on for what felt like hours, though her berry ring didn’t go out, and there was no way to count the passage of time in the cave. She just kept walking, going deeper and deeper into the earth.

As she walked, she wondered how she’d be able to pick up the jewel if she found it. She might be able to pick it up with her lips. They were wonderfully flexible, but she worried that the edges of the gem might be too sharp and would cut her mouth.

Perhaps her tail? But no, that wouldn’t work. How would she grip the thing? Her tail had a lovely tuft of hair at the end, but that was hardly the same as fingers.

Her thoughts were so centered on these concerns that she almost didn’t notice the door on her right.

She was several steps past it before she even realized it was there. The corridor was quite steep, and too narrow for her to turn. Angelina’s heart pounded. What was she going to do?

She had two choices. Keep going and hope for a wider space, or back up. She took a step forward and felt the walls press against her sides. Her long unicorn body couldn’t turn around, and the more she struggled, the tighter the rock walls wedged her in. She had to back up.

She pulled back. The stone scraped against her coat, pulling at the hair, catching on her satchel, but she couldn’t move. She was stuck!

“No,” she panted. “I can’t be trapped here!”

She tried harder, putting her full weight into the effort, pushing backward with all four hooves against the stone floor. It worked. She moved an inch. Not much, but enough to let her know she could make it. She pushed again, twisting against the rock walls, and felt them scratch her sides. One more tug and she was free, stumbling backward to land on her rump, her pack smacking against her chest.
